Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter comes and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, a lot of them can be tracked back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not addressed, your system may suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself enough time to view and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system ends up with the most breakdowns. Begin adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system may be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises at the end of their lifecycle. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies could notice an uptick in their symptoms. Some other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
