Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your House

When it’s a searing summer afternoon in Odessa, nothing feels worse than realizing your air conditioner isn’t operating the way it should. The last thing you want to do is schedule cooling system repair. But your AC is a quite complex system, so it can be challenging to discover what’s creating the issue without training.

That’s why Redhawk Heating & Air Conditioning crafted this handbook to help you see what might be going on with your air conditioner. Below, you’ll discover a few typical reasons your family is feeling too warm. And though a few of these are simple DIY tasks, you may still need to turn to an expert for air conditioner repair.

And if need help, Redhawk Heating & Air Conditioning is prepared to take care of your home. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your house in Odessa.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Could Be Wrong

Every person adjusts their thermostat a bit differently to suit their particular needs. However, a number of people make the mistake of setting their thermostat to “On” as opposed to “Auto.” With this setting, the fan in your AC will continue to blow even after you’ve attained your preferred temperature.

This can feel like your vents are pushing out warmish air, when actually it’s simply employing the fan more often than required. Trying changing this setting and see if things change.

2. Your System Needs a Routine Cleaning

There are two central areas to look for dirt or dust accrual when your cooling system doesn’t feel like it is functioning correctly.

Firstly, inspect your HVAC filter. If you don’t replace your filter often enough, buildup can make it more difficult for air to move through and lower the temperature your house. If your filter is obviously dirty or dusty, it’s definitely time to replace it. (And as a rule, you have to switch it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter appears clean, go to your outside unit. See if there’s a couple of feet of space around it and clean up plants or dirt around it. This part of your system releases the heat from your space. If the coils outside are clogged, you won’t be feeling cool indoors.

We advise scheduling professional air conditioner maintenance yearly to keep your unit working properly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your System is Releasing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the chemical that chills the air in your house. It cycles between your indoor and outdoor system pieces to absorb and let off heat, to help your home remain comfortable. If there is an opening along the way, you won’t be comfortable again until you set professional air conditioning repair.

Signals of a refrigerant leak include a decrease in treated air, climbing energy charges, frozen evaporator coils and strange hissing noises originating from your AC.

If you suspect refrigerant may be leaking, call Redhawk Heating & Air Conditioning for HVAC repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be detrimental to your family’s health.

4. One or More Parts Need to Be Replaced

Your AC includes a a handful of key elements. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one of these is broken, your home comfort declines.

Our Redhawk Heating & Air Conditioning technicians are trained and knowledged in HVAC. They can help you diagnose and repair any problem.

5. Your Air Conditioner Should Be Replaced

If your air conditioner is upward of 10 years old, it could likely be time to research new air conditioner installation. As your system puts on the years, it unfortunately won’t run as well as it did when it was new. And it may be making your place too warm.

If your AC is more current but still isn’t cooling things off, it may be too small for your house. HVAC systems are not all the same size. An AC that’s undersized just can’t help a place the way an accurately sized air conditioner can.
